Kerry Roberts Therapy Portrait

Kerry Roberts

Gestalt Psychotherapist

Through my own personal therapy, I learnt that fully connecting with others enabled me to tap into internal wisdom and resources I already possessed, stripping back negative thinking, critical judgements, shame, guilt and habitual patterns that were no longer serving me. Through a healing therapeutic relationship, I allowed myself to re-experience emotional pain. I have more balance and fulfilment in my life now and am passionate about creating change through increased self-awareness.

Therapy is a safe place where you can come and truly be yourself, to be seen and heard, to explore who you are, restore choice and choose how you would like to live. My role is to support you through that process where it is possible to learn new ways of being. As a Gestalt Psychotherapist, I assist in restoring a sense of healing and wholeness within by facilitating a deep level of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and lasting growth and change.

My work is largely informed by my psychotherapeutic training in contemporary Gestalt Therapy. I am a PACFA qualified Gestalt Psychotherapist having completed a Post Graduate Advanced Clinical training with The Relational Institute Australia (TRIA).

My working as a therapist and counsellor is informed not only by my formal trainings but also by my varied life experiences, working in the corporate world for 2 decades, being a mother, grandmother, navigating a separation as well as a new relationship and all the challenges and joys that encompasses.

I continue my own personal and professional development in counselling and psychotherapy as I believe nourishing authentic connections with self and others is central for a satisfying human existence.

What is Gestalt Therapy?

Gestalt therapy is among the earliest and most enduring of psychotherapeutic approaches that are grounded in the relationship between therapist and client as the source of healing. Whilst a bit of attention initially will be spent on understanding what has led you up to now, Gestalt therapy isn’t about going over and over things that happened in the past. It is about understanding how the experiences of the past impact us which leads to more choice on how to respond, become more present, and less defined by our past based on what is real for us now.

Working with both mind and body, Gestalt offers an integrated and effective approach to processing old and underlying traumas, emotions and narratives that are impeding and impacting ones life.

Together we can discover your story, embrace what is and let go of that which is no longer serving you.

Frequently asked questions

How often do I need to come?

Therapy usually works best when done on a regular weekly basis to build a safe and solid foundation for work, but if that does not work for you, we will find a more flexible approach that suits your needs be that fortnightly or something different.

How long is a session?

Individual sessions are 50-60 minutes long. Usually there is a natural closure to what has been worked on around that time of the session. This is generally a suitable time frame for processing and exploring what is presented without becoming overwhelming.

How long does therapy last?

Therapy takes anywhere between a few months to a number of years. This depends on what is bringing you in, how well we connect and how deep you want our work to go. I recommend at least 4 sessions where we can discuss needs, build rapport and develop a plan to reach your goals.

What is the process like?

We agree on what you are hoping to get out of seeing me at the beginning of our work together. We then review regularly how we are progressing, talk about what is working well for you and if anything needs to change. Regular reflections on our work give you a chance to appreciate how far you have come and reassess your needs as they may have changed. When you are ready to end therapy, it is a good idea to arrange a session to allow for a healthy closure.

What are the payment terms?

Session fees are $150 +GST.

Payments are made in advance of each session through the booking system via credit/debit card.If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, at least 24 hours notice is required. Any cancellations within 24-hours will attract a full fee.

Can I claim Medicare rebate on my therapy fees?

No, my services do not fall under the Medicare scheme (or your Mental Health Plan from your GP), only psychologists and some social workers work under the Medicare scheme and therefore get rebates.

With a psychotherapist/counsellor, there is no need for a GP referral and our sessions are not in any way limited. With current fees charged by most psychologists, you still need to pay a gap fee, which is approximately the same as the fees I charge.
